Call your creditors: what to ask
Lower rates, hardship programs and payment plans.
Many people never ask. A polite phone call can sometimes lower an interest rate, remove a fee or set up a hardship plan.
What to ask for
- A lower interest rate, especially if you've paid on time
- Removal of a late fee
- A hardship program if your income dropped
- A payment plan for a past-due balance
- For medical bills: an itemized bill, financial assistance, and an interest-free payment plan
Tips
- Have your account information and a realistic number ready
- Write down the date, the person's name and what was agreed
- Ask for any agreement in writing
