Student loans: where to start
Know your loan types and check official options.
Student loans work differently from other debt. Federal loans have repayment options that private loans usually don't, and the rules change, so official sources matter.
First steps
- Log in to StudentAid.gov to see your federal loans and servicer
- Find out which loans are federal and which are private
- Check the repayment plans available for your federal loans, including income-driven options
- If you're struggling, ask your servicer about deferment or forbearance, and their costs
Avoid scams
You never need to pay a company to apply for federal repayment plans or forgiveness. Those applications are free through StudentAid.gov and your servicer.
